Genetic counseling is the process which helps people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to health and disease.
It is a service offered to individuals and families for comprehending certain disorders by investigating family health history to identify their risks, determine if testing is needed, interpret information and review available options with them so that they are able to take informed decisions for themselves and their family.
Genetic Counseling is provided by Genetic counselors, who are trained and certified to work independently or as members of a health care team in Pediatric, OBG, Oncology, Neurology, Cardiology and several other clinical specialties. They support patients with birth defects, progressive genetic disorders with early or late onset and help other family members who may be at risk to plan preventative management for the inherited conditions.
